Friend and very talented chef Yuki Gomi has just launched her first book, Sushi at Home with the lovely people at Penguin. I was delighted to be invited to the launch.
Yuki was one of my chefs at my Supper Club, Full House, where we ran sushi classes called ‘Just Roll’.So having watched her career blossom, I am so proud of her first book! Yuki is trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Chicago, and has worked with some seriously good sushi and ramen masters in Japan, which explains some of the French twists in some of her recipes.
As well as the comprehensive sushi recipes (covering both traditional and modern flavours and techniques), the book is a feast for the eyes – the photography is also by one of my favourite food bloggers, Keiko Oikawa’s Nordljus.
I once read that while the UK was known for its law, India for its religion, China for its culture…the Japanese is known for its DESIGN. And this stunning book was proof of this. The book design, recipes and illustrations were meticulously and beautifully created.
The event was held at an understated location at the Republic of Fritz Hansen in Central London…
Some traditional entertainment for the evening….
Sushi rolls and Sake was being served left, right and centre…
Here’s Yuki doing a demo of her sushi!
So if you fancy making Sashimi, Sushi, Futomaki, Hokomaki, Miso Soup and Dashi easily in your own home, then this is your bible.
Fish was from Moxon’s, sake from Urakasumi, and Yuzu vodkas from Yutaka with the lovely guys at Tazaki Foods. Also lovely to meet the founder of Kazari. Great spread!
