I recently received my copy of the beautifully produced food magazine Asia Eater. As a lover of all Asian food, this was right up my street! As the publishing world goes digital, I am afraid I still like my magazines heavy, thick and curled up with me on the sofa. Magazines I cannot live without … Continue reading
Category Archives: Food Culture & Travel
Food is culture.
In this category, I talk about the spirit in which food is consumed around the world. I look at the craft of cooking, the traditions we celebrate, and the rituals of eating. One of my greatest pleasures is getting under the skin of a country or city, by observing (and trying a lot of!) the food that is part of their culture and tradition. I try to visit new places as often as I can be organised and have the resources to do so. Here are some of my adventures.
If you love Unagi, you will faint at Hitsumabushi
One of my favourite things to order in a Japanese restaurant is unagi. Whether on nigiri sushi, or a whole layer of it on a bed of sticky sushi rice, I just can’t get enough of it. The flesh is meaty and fatty, yet the sauce is a sweet and sticky in a trashy-but-good kind … Continue reading
Pork + Potatoes x 3 in Germany
Perception of German food is rather unusual in Western Europe. Unlike its direct neighbours; the refined classical cooking styles of the French, the lighter mediterranean dishes of the Italians, or the punchy seafood and colours of Spanish food, German cuisine is more akin to the Brits; stodgy, meaty, hearty, and well, kind of brown. We were lucky enough to be arranged a night’s stay at a traditional Onsen hotel, that included a stunning Kaiseki dinner. My expectations were cloud-9-high already since the most beautiful food book in my collection … Continue reading
Muji does Food
Muji in the UK is my go-to-place for simple clothing, great stationary and really functional homewares for small flats like mine in London. So when I walked into Muji in Tokyo, I was delighted to find so much FOOD! Rows and rows of their food ranged from ‘must-haves’ to ‘what-on-earth-is-that’? All wrapped in Muji’s signature … Continue reading
Green Tea themed Cafe: Nana’s Green Tea, Tokyo
On a rather hung over-morning, after far too much Shochu, my friend K and I drowned out last night’s karaoke flashbacks by heading to Nana’s Green Tea. Nana’s Green Tea is a relatively new chain of cafes that sell donburi (rice bowls) and noodles in an elegant simple environment, perfect for ladies that lunch. My … Continue reading
